My weight gain sky rocketed after I had had a twin birth in 2009. Since then, it had been on an upward trend. This is attributed to the fact that when I was lactating, I was fed on all kinds of foods in order to have “enough breast milk’’. Little did I know that I was doing myself an injustice.
This left me with a bulging stomach; I was 14 inches before which increased to 16.5 inches. I begun feeling so lazy and fatigued that I completely avoided any form of exercise or walks. The bringing up of the kids also took a toll on me, my hands were literally full and all that mattered was my children. I had no time to take care of myself leave alone what I ate.
Healthy foods like fruits were only for the children and most of the time I found myself having a fruit only once a week. Due to the pressure of juggling between being a mother and office work, I took consolation in food. I love to eat! I ate as much as I could and I took as much alcohol as I could afford.
Red meat was my favorite meal especially nyama choma and fried goat meat!!!! I could literally eat 1kg on my own. No exercise at all! I drove to everywhere I wanted and this made the situation worse.
Early in the year 2012 when I was doing a program on Renewing self by the ALABASTRON, I learnt that I needed to take care of my MIND, BODY & SOUL if I was to live my life significantly. It was at that point that I decided that I needed to do something about my weight. However, procrastination could not let me & I stayed in my comfort zone until Aug 2012 when on a special treat out of town my sweetheart noticed I was panting even after a short walk and I remember him saying – “soon you will not enjoy anything because of your weight; you need to do something about it”. Wauuh, that caught my attention really hard, & immediately I enrolled in a GYM. I worked out for a whole month and guess what, when I got to the scale, I was actually putting on more weight instead. I only did my gym for 2 months. Result, No weight lost.
I was so disappointed that I gave up going to the gym and I went back to my comfort zone. On 1st Dec 2012, my best friend Marion and I went to my cousin’s graduation ceremony and 3 different people including my mum told me that I looked bad carrying all that weight. I was so disturbed and that night I told myself it is time to act. How could people even from upcountry notice that am too FAT? I was so embarrassed. By this time my friend Marion had meet Kepha Nyanumba, a consultant nutritionist and she requested him to give me a chance for sponsorship in his weight loss program. I joined the program on February, 2013 and within one month I had lost 5kgs! I continued with the weight loss program until I achieved my target weight!! Am grateful to Kepha Nyanumba for the amazing support and professional guidance during my weight loss journey.
